Every young New Yorker has a story. We hand them the tools to tell it.
Cultural Art Streams empowers NYC youth ages 14–24 to find their voice through hands-on media creation — smartphone filmmaking, DJing, and cultural storytelling — inside a real, professional studio on Broadway. No experience required. No equipment to buy. Just access, mentorship, and a room that has shaped creative work for over 30 years.
Most young people in New York already carry a powerful camera, recording studio, and editing suite in their hands — they’ve just never been shown how to use it. Cultural Art Streams closes that gap.
We teach foundational media skills that help young New Yorkers express themselves, document their communities, and discover creative and economic pathways that might otherwise stay out of reach. Every workshop is beginner-friendly, requires no prior experience, and is built around accessible technology — primarily the smartphones students already own — so the learning continues long after they leave the room. We don’t just teach a class; we hand each student a skill they keep for life.
The work happens inside Union Square Loft, a professional production studio at 873 Broadway in the Flatiron District that has been a home for creative work since 1994. For many of our students, it is the first time they have ever set foot in a real studio — and the first time someone has told them their story is worth recording.
Each program is designed to take a complete beginner to a finished, shareable piece of work in just two hours — building not only technical ability, but the confidence to keep creating.

Carlos Montoya brings more than 30 years of audiovisual expertise to Cultural Art Streams. A former TEDx Bushwick executive producer and an A/V specialist since 1992, he has designed complete production systems, operated cinema cameras for documentary and commercial work, and run Union Square Loft as a professional studio for three decades.
His commitment to this work is personal. Carlos was raised in a family devoted to service — from his mother’s grassroots community leadership in Queens to his parents’ missionary work teaching indigenous communities in the Amazon. Cultural Art Streams is the continuation of that legacy: meeting young people where they are, handing them real tools, and trusting them to create something that matters.
Accessible by Design
We teach using the smartphones students already own — removing the single biggest barrier to creative education and making professional skills available regardless of economic background.
A Professional Environment
Students learn in a real working studio with Fulcrum Acoustics sound, professional lighting, and industry-standard equipment — an environment most have never had access to before.
Cultural Expression
We empower young people to share their own perspectives, celebrate their heritage, and amplify voices and stories that too often go unheard in mainstream media.
Lasting Impact
Each two-hour intensive teaches durable fundamentals — the kind of skills that spark a hobby, a portfolio, or a career, and that students carry with them for years.
Cultural Art Streams is ready to scale. We have the curriculum, the studio, the equipment, and the leadership in place today — what we seek is the funding to reach more young New Yorkers.
We operate under the fiscal sponsorship of House of Good Deeds, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that handles all grant administration and financial reporting. All contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. EIN available upon request.
Our work aligns with funding priorities in:
Youth Arts Education
Hands-on creative instruction for ages 14–24 with immediate, tangible results in a single session.
Digital Literacy
Practical media-creation skills that prepare young people for a content-driven economy.
Cultural Preservation
Storytelling that celebrates and documents the heritage of NYC’s diverse communities.
Workforce Development
Foundational skills in film, audio, and music that open creative and technical career pathways.
Community Empowerment
Professional studio access for underserved neighborhoods that rarely have it.
Equity of Access
A model built so that economic background never determines who gets to create.
We welcome funding at every level — from small community grants to major youth-education initiatives — as well as corporate sponsorships, in-kind equipment support, and volunteer mentorship from media professionals and educators. Contact us to discuss a partnership →
